How car finance pre-approval works in Australia

What pre-approval for a car loan is, what it does and does not guarantee, and how to get it before you shop.

Pre-approval, sometimes called conditional approval, is a lender’s initial indication that they are willing to lend you a certain amount, based on the information you have given them. It is not a final loan contract, but it can make car shopping much easier.

Why get pre-approved?

  • Know your budget. You shop for cars you can actually afford.
  • Negotiate with confidence. You can act quickly when you find the right car.
  • Avoid disappointment. You find out early if there is an issue with your application.

What pre-approval does not guarantee

Pre-approval is conditional. The final approval usually depends on the specific car (age, price, and sometimes type), verification of your documents, and the lender’s final assessment. If your circumstances change before settlement, the outcome may change too.

How to get pre-approved

  1. Tell us what you are looking to buy and roughly how much you would like to borrow.
  2. Answer a few quick questions about your income, living situation and credit history.
  3. A finance specialist calls you to confirm details and explain your options.
  4. Provide documents when asked, usually ID and income evidence.

How long does it take?

Many of our clients settle within 24 to 48 hours of applying once their documents are in and the lender’s conditions are met, though it depends on the lender and the vehicle.

Applying with Swan Loans will not affect your credit score. Pre-approval is conditional and subject to lender approval, credit criteria, fees and charges.
